Happy SepticSmart Week!!

That’s right, September 19-23 is National SepticSmart Week!  EPA created the event to educate septic owners and encourage responsible operation and maintenance of septic systems.  Governor Jay Inslee has proclaimed the week Washington’s SepticSmart Week.  See the proclamation below.  As the Governor says, “Proper septic system use and routine care are vital to protecting public health; preserving our highly valued groundwater, lakes, streams, and Puget Sound; and avoiding costly repairs that can result from neglect”.

And it’s true!  Almost one million septic systems are in operation in Washington State.  They serve about 1/3 of our state’s population and treat over 100 million gallons of wastewater each day.  These systems are an important part of our water quality infrastructure.  Let’s honor their often thankless service this week!

DOH is supporting the spirit of the campaign all month with bus ads in the regional Thurston County area, billboards in the Yakima and Spokane areas and social media posts all this week.  Many of our local partners are celebrating and promoting the event in their communities with outreach and education events.

Help us to push this event further and raise awareness and appreciation for the septic system.  Spread the word.  Do your part, Be SepticSmart!
