Fire crews from East Jefferson Fire Rescue conduct a controlled burn in the Gibbs Lake area to practice structure fire fighting techniques. The Gibbs Lake area is very remote but our AMI meter disconnect had the home shut off instantly.

When a structure fire report comes in, Jefferson PUD responds quickly and safety is the number one item as they assist emergency crews.

Ideally, the first step is to remotely disconnect power to the home using our Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) system. AMI meters can shut off service at the meter within seconds—helping reduce risk before first responders and line crews even arrive.

If a remote disconnect isn’t possible, crews are dispatched to shut off power directly at the home’s meter. Under certain circumstances line crew might need to remove power at the neighborhood level. Line crew will work quickly to restore power once they are able to isolate the home where first responders are working.

Upon arrival to a structure fire, our line crew immediately coordinate with the fire service incident commander on scene. Power is only physically removed once it is safe and under the direction of emergency personnel. This close communication ensures both public and firefighter safety while protecting the integrity of the electrical system.
