Trees: Nature’s Energy Saver
Trees do much more than beautify our neighborhoods, they are one of the most effective and affordable ways to improve energy efficiency around your home. When thoughtfully planted and properly maintained, trees provide natural shade in the summer, help block cold winter winds, and create a more comfortable environment year-round.
Stay Cooler in the Summer
A mature shade tree can significantly reduce the amount of direct sunlight that reaches your home. By shading roofs, walls, windows, and air conditioning units, trees help lower indoor temperatures and reduce the amount of energy needed to cool your home. Strategic placement of deciduous trees on the south and west sides of a home can provide cooling shade during the hottest months while allowing warming sunlight through after the leaves fall in autumn.
Save Energy in the Winter
Evergreen trees and shrubs can act as natural windbreaks, reducing the impact of cold winter winds. By slowing wind speeds around your home, they help reduce heat loss and improve indoor comfort, which can lower heating costs during the colder months.
Plant the Right Tree in the Right Place
Proper tree selection and placement are essential. Before planting, consider the tree’s mature height and spread, distance from buildings, underground utilities, and overhead power lines. Planting the right tree in the right location helps maximize energy savings while reducing future maintenance needs and improving public safety.
Remember: Before planting any tree, contact your local utility or call 811 to have underground utilities located. 811 is a free utility located service! When planting near overhead power lines, select low-growing tree species that will not interfere with electrical equipment as they mature.
