PUD WiFi HotSpots

Rollout of PUD broadband throughout rural Jefferson County is full steam ahead, but did you know we already offer free WiFi hotspots at locations throughout the county?

Free public WiFi hotspots are available at PUD substations (like the Chimacum Substation shown here) and other public locations throughout the county.

Free WiFi to access the internet is available at public facilities and cafes in our region, and in 2020 the PUD began adding outdoor hotspots to key locations. Listed here are current hotspot locations (see map below for additional sites):

  • 210 Four Corners Rd PUD facility
  • Chimacum substation
  • Gardiner fire station
  • Jefferson County Airport (Spruce Goose parking area)
  • Port Townsend Rec Center
  • PT Visitors’ Center
  • Port of Port Townsend
  • Marrowstone fire station
  • Kearney substation
  • Hastings substation
  • Quilcene substation
  • Brinnon community center (serviced by CenturyLink DSL)

Depending on the site, our PUD hotspots provide speeds of anywhere from 10 to 100mbps each way. Each way is important. One things so many internet users struggle with is slow upload speeds (under 5mbps). Such glacially-slow speeds make online classrooms and zoom meetings difficult to participate in. Most PUD hotspots offer symmetrical speeds, meaning internet is as fast coming down it is fast going up.

The network is open and it’s accessible 24/7. Expansion of the PUD fiber network does require periodic work on specific sites, so we apologize if WiFi is temporarily unavailable during maintenance.

To access the WiFi, choose JeffPUD_Community from the list of network options. All PUD and fire station locations have parking, so users can connect from their cars safely.
